How much does Claude Code cost?
You can run Claude Code on a Claude subscription or on pay-as-you-go API tokens. As of 17 October 2026, Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually, $200 up front) and Claude Max starts at $100 a month. On the API you pay per million tokens, from $0.10 input on Claude Haiku 5.5 up to $10 input on Claude Fable 5.1. All prices are USD and checked against Anthropic's official pricing pages.

Extra costs to know
- Fast mode on Claude Opus 5.5 is $8 input / $40 output per 1M tokens, and in Claude Code it uses extra usage credits.
- Claude API web search is $10 per 1,000 searches.
- Claude Managed Agents session runtime is $0.08 per session-hour, plus tokens.
- Claude Sonnet 5 stays at $2 / $10: Anthropic says the planned 1 Sep 2026 rise to $3 / $15 will not occur.
Worked example (illustrative)
A session that reads 1 million input tokens and writes 200,000 output tokens on Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs $2.00 + $2.00 = $4.00 at list price, before any caching discount. The same session on Claude Opus 5.5 costs $4.00 + $4.00 = $8.00.
